City of lost children

PAN's fairytale

To What extent are the narratives expressing national cinema?

The narratives express their own national cinema in two very different ways. Amile in the very tourist friendly paris approach, where as in pans is the harsh reality of life during the spanish cilvil war. Amile is portrayed to show all the positives about paris showing it as the worlds most romantic place where love and happiness thrive, Pans completely juxtaposes this as it is showing the harsh reality of life during the spanish cilvil war showing death , heart break and misey. although both films use magical realism they both use them in very different ways amile uses them to show that she has the mind of a child still where as in pans it is used as an escapism from the harsh reality of an adult world that a child has been thrown in to a completely missing her childhood, but it is used to show innocents in both films. BOth films portray there country in very different ways Amile does it in a positive light and pans in a negative.

Amelie and Pans Labyrinth do both have a overall contrast of in the general overview of national cinema through the clear difference of two different culture, however through Amelie's fairytale perceived myth of Paris whilst Pans Labyrinth beholds a more harsh and realistic approach to the national context behind the film. Therefore, I do strongly agree with you contrasting statement as Amelie fantasised myth of Paris is reinforced through the Classic Hollywood Narrative structure used within the film,  however, Pans Labyrinth also follows conventions of the Classic Hollywood Narrative and also presents signs of Magical Realism, which you stated previously, therefore with these fantasied structure of narrative that is performed in both Amelie and Pans Labyrinth , Pans and Amelie may be more similar to the way they express their national cinema then to what you have stated due to the narrative conventions that I have justified against my point.

. both films have a contract on national cinema
. Magical realisum mentioned in both
. CHN
. both films similar in their expression
. missing myths about pans touches in myths of paris

Pans Labyrinth explores national cinema heavily as the narrative has a strong message letting the audience know that war is not a child's game, Amile is harder to discuss as it follows classic hollywood narrative heavily it is more of an advertisement for paris then trying to make a statement about the country itself. Pans Labyrinth explores spanish myths with themes of the catholic religion  in the film. this is a big thing telling us about the culture of spain at the time. although magical realism plays a big part in both of the films showing they are seen though a child's eye.
